To find print and electronic books on literary criticism, you can search in the library catalog, SpartaCat. Here are a couple of search tips to remember:
TIP #1: AUTHOR vs. SUBJECT
- Searching for an author's name as "Author" will return books written by that person. For example, a search for the author "James Joyce" will return the books Finnegans Wake, Ulysses, and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
- However, searching for an author's name as "Subject" will return books about that person and his/her works. For example, a search for the subject "James Joyce" will return the books Joyce: A Collection of Critical Essays, The Conscience of James Joyce, and Joyce, the Man, the Work, the Reputation.
TIP #2: KEYWORD vs. SUBJECT
- Searching for a term as a "Keyword" will search for that term in the book's entire record, including in the title and the summary fields. This will give you more and broader results. For example, searching for the term "Joyce criticism" as a keyword returns 53 items.
- Searching for a term as a "Subject" will search for that term only in the subject heading field. This will give you fewer, more specific results. For example, searching for the term "Joyce criticism" as a subject returns 34 items.
TIP #3: E-BOOKS
- In addition to searching for eBooks in the library catalog, you can also find them using the EBSCO eBook Collection database. Use the term "literary criticism" along with the title or author of the work.
